someone - i forget who - came to Pollack's studio and seeing his work for the first time suggested he would run out of ideas if he didn't paint from nature - he responded
"I AM NATURE" . . . i am david
i idolize the cubists and the "action painters" - the cubists for realizing you can't compete with nature (you can't erect a mountain range or cry an ocean) or technology
(i can't paint a double exposure) - the action painters for their reckless abandon, their sheer power and scale, thier love of the liquid
i inject my twisted humor into the art whenever it's inappropriate - i created a large continuous assemblage (approximently 100' long by 15' high) depicting legendary loves
throughout history titled "The Big Bang" - adam and eve came first in the series of couples - joe dimaggio and marilyn monroe were painted on a pull down silver screen - joe's body
was a pin striped coffee pot with its little spout holding a bat - i first met my wife at this showing - i'll never forget her first words to me - "you're an asshole" - i've yet
to convince her otherwise - i followed up with another assemblage (40' long by 8' high) titled "The Big Bang the Sequel" depicting significant moments in my relationship with my
wife
i painted a version of Van Gogh's self-portrait on giant puzzle pieces cut out of plywood and arranged them as a relief that didn't quite fit together - the piece with his
ear i hung in a different room to be sold separately
i always work on the horizontal plane - keeps me grounded - i lay the canvas on the floor - i like the liquid nature of enamels and opt not to overly constrict its movement
- sometimes i'll raise a side of the canvas and just let it flow for awhile - painting itself - enlisting gravity - whatever - painting is never a means to an end - there's no formula - no
vision or certain concept of the result - there's a beginning - much randomness - some decisions (if there's any theory it's not pondered - often it's whoops - that worked) - if you're working
in a whole surface technique it's a mistake to try to "fix" something. . ."maybe it's broke" - I don't know - you decide - most of the time i'm human - no man is a peninsula
